A new regular transport option is emerging in international logistics between Asia and Europe. Chinese shipping company Sealegend Shipping plans to operate container services between Ningbo and the British port of Felixstowe via the Northern Sea Route.
The service is expected to operate weekly during the navigation season. The conventional sea route between the two ports takes around 40 days, while the Arctic route could potentially reduce transit time by almost half under favourable ice and weather conditions.
The Northern Sea Route runs along Russia’s Arctic coast and bypasses the traditional route through the Indian Ocean, the Red Sea and the Suez Canal. However, its operation remains dependent on seasonality, ice conditions, vessel specifications and supporting infrastructure.
For the international logistics market, the launch of a scheduled service represents another step toward diversification of transport routes between China and Europe. The Arctic route is not yet a replacement for established corridors, but it could become an additional option for selected cargoes and seasonal shipments.
